Rent a car, drive around. The White Mountains are beautiful. Tamworth is about 2:15 hours from Boston and 1 hour from either Portland ME or Manchester NH.
By Plane
Manchester (MHT) and Portland (PWM) are the closest airports, but if you're flying from outside the Northeast, look to Boston (BOS).
